Uncovering the Science Behind Neonatal Deaths

The NICUnet is a research collaboration between neonatologists and researchers at academic and medical institutions that was created to uncover the science behind rare events such as unexplained neonatal deaths and to support and inform families who have experienced the loss of their newborn.

Our Focus

Unexplained Rare Events in the NICU

The birth of a child is one of the most meaningful moments in human experience. Thanks to social progress and advancements in science and medicine, most births result in a healthy child. As part of the safety net provided to newborns, Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) monitor and care for babies in need of medical attention.

One in a thousand babies born after 28 weeks of gestation sadly pass away in a NICU for reasons we don't typically understand.

As such deaths only occur a small number of times each year in any single NICU, we can only understand them by working together with many collaborating neonatologists.

Understanding rare NICU outcomes by working together

NICUnet was established as a research network for neonatologists to study rare events: those affecting about 1 in 1,000 live births. Led by researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, the NICUnet comprises 14 collaborating NICUs across six states of the USA. The NICUnet continues to grow, and any NICU around the world is eligible to join the network. For now, we are focussing on understanding why babies sometimes die in the NICU for reasons unrelated to prematurity.

Any NICU around the world can join our efforts.

Supporting
Parents

The NICUnet was established to improve our understanding of the genetic factors that lead to neonatal death and to help bereaved parents obtain closure and plan for future pregnancies. By participating as a parent, you also contribute towards scientific progress that may in the future help other parents avoid the experience of losing their own child.
