Dr. Turro and Dr. Felix established the NICUnet project in 2022 to improve our understanding of the genetic determinants of neonatal deaths in the NICU, and to help bereaved parents obtain closure and plan for future pregnancies.

Dr. Ernest Turro is an Associate Professor and the Arthur J and Nellie Z Cohen Chair of Pediatrics (Genetics) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York. He has over 17 years of research experience in genomics and molecular diagnostics. His research focuses on the development and application of statistical methods for interpreting genomic and clinical data. He has made important contributions towards understanding the genetic causes of rare diseases across a broad spectrum of pathology. He has published extensively in the peer-reviewed literature, including articles as senior author in Science, Nature, Nature Medicine, Blood and the American Journal of Human Genetics.

About

Felix Richter, MD, PhD, is a Resident Physician in Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York with expertise in next generation sequencing analyses, congenital heart disease, and clinical informatics. His publications, including articles in Nature Genetics, Pediatric Research, and Bioinformatics, have applied statistical and machine learning approaches to complex biological and clinical datasets to improve our understanding of pediatric disease. He is excited to build the NICUnet to provide both an invaluable clinical service and make new discoveries in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
